Monolith Soft’s Kyoto Studio Is Growing

Nintendo subsidiary Monolith Soft (Xenoblade, Xenoblade Chronicles X) have two studios–their original studio in Tokyo, which works on the Xeno games, and a second studio in Kyoto that was set up in order to assist with the production of Nintendo games.

While the Tokyo studio has been busy with games like Xenoblade, the Kyoto studio has–so far–consisted primarily of artists, who have designed assets for games such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Now, this studio has its own website, separate from the main Monolith Soft website.

Studio director Yasuyuki Honne (known best as the art director of Xenogears and Chrono Cross) tweeted the news, with the Kyoto studio’s website asking potential candidates to join them and help create games and dreams. More information, the website says, will be shared in July.

One of the games Monolith Soft are currently collaborating with Nintendo on is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While it’s likely that both Monolith’s Tokyo and Kyoto studios are involved with the game’s development, it is interesting to see the Kyoto studio gradually beginning to establish its own identity. Perhaps we’ll see it develop its own games eventually, too.

In the meantime, it makes sense that Monolith Soft is growing. Over the past five years, Nintendo have begun to develop more sophisticated games using more expensive technology, and so it’s only natural that the company–and its subsidiaries–need to expand.
